Day 31 - Exploring Calgary

Hello friends, today was a very eventful day in Calgary, with so many things to cover, so I'm excited to tell you all about it. My day started by getting on a train going to DT Calgary. I had Tim and his sister Michelle show me around, which was awesome of them to do as I would have definitely gotten lost. There was a lot of really cool art all throughout Calgary, which was apparently all a part of public art policy that was put in place to promote engagement and the growth of a culturally informed society, isn't that just fascinating?

Anyways, we walked along the Bow River and made our way to St. Patrick's Island Park (which Michelle mistakenly thought was Prince's Island Park, but then was confused about where the Peace Bridge was). We then walked over to Studio Bell, which is an exhibit on Canadian music history, and while we decided against going into the exhibit, I got to play "Heart & Soul" on the piano in the lobby of the building before we left.

We walked down Stephen Avenue, a pedestrian path through DT Calgary with a lot of art, history and shops (great for tourists), as we made our way over to the Calgary Tower. Very close to the Calgary Tower is the Bow Building, which has a giant head sculpture right in front of it (which is very easy/tempting to climb if it wasn't for the security guard there). We continued walking down Stephen Avenue until we got to The Core (a large mall in DT Calgary), where we grab some food and went to the Devonian Gardens on the 4th floor. After seeing everything we planned to see in the centre of DT Calgary, we walked a bit more North and finally made it to Prince's Island Park, which had a very scenic walking path. We found the Peace Bridge, which apparently is quite a controversial bridge given how much money has been sunk into it at this point, but at least it was a rather good looking bridge.

Our last stop downtown was in the most hipster part of downtown, Kensington, where we stopped by a shop called "Charisma" and checked out the patches that they had. On our way back home, we got off the train at the Calgary Stampede grounds so that I could explore that area as well (given that I won't be here for the actual Stampede), and it was really cool to see that part of the Calgary culture that is such a big part of its history.

When we got home, I got a bit of work done, and then Tim's parents had made us a steak dinner. Tim's family has been so generous and supportive throughout my time here in Calgary, which I am very appreciative of. After dinner, I went to meet up with a friend of mine who was one of my former student, Kyle Hall, at the Italian Centre Shop for the dessert. We then went down to Fish Creek Provincial Park, which is the 2nd largest urban park in Canada, and went for a stroll while we chatted. It was really nice catching up with him.

Today was a very long and productive day, tomorrow I'm hoping to go and visit Banff and see as much of it as I can.
