Day 16 - Driving Coast to Coast in Newfoundland
Hello friends, after over 12
hours of driving, we finally made it back to Port Aux Basques. St. John’s was a
lot of fun, but the drive back to the ferry terminal was just way too long. We were originally going
to be leaving Newfoundland tomorrow morning, but because we got here early and
there were some vacancies on the ferry, the kind people at Marine Atlantic were
nice enough to let us take tonight’s ferry at no additional cost.
Even though today mainly
comprised of driving from one side of Newfoundland to the other, we made two
stop that are definitely worth talking about, one of which was funny while the
other was astonishing. Our first stop today was at a small town called Dildo,
NL. Because Anthony and I are as immature as we are, we thought it was
hilarious and that we just had to stop by there. The town was actually situated
on a waterfront, and so it had some really nice views, but let’s be real, that
not what we were there to see. We saw a whole bunch of fascinating signs,
including “Dildo Harbour”, “Dildo Brewing Co. & Museum”, “Canada Post –
Dildo” and “All Saints’ Anglican Church of Dildo”, but the best had to be a
boat on the side of the road simply called “Dildo Pleasure 2”. At this point in
our trip, I realized that the people that live there had to be having as much
fun with the name of the town as we were, which made it that much better.
Our next stop, which was about 7
hours away, was at Gros Morne National Park. Despite the fact that it was still
closed for the season, we knew that there were some amazing sights to be seen
there and decided to drive around until we found them, and boy did we find
them. Although I was originally very skeptical, Anthony convinced me to keep
going, and we saw some amazing mountain views, most of which still had snow on
top of them. The sun was in perfect position the entire time we were there, so
it was awe-inspiring to say the least. We took over a hundred of pictures each,
none of which could ever come close to describing what the views were actually
like. We made about 5 stops along the way, each more stunning than the last,
and it just further proved how beautiful Canada truly is. I could spend hours
gushing over how pretty everything was, so I’ll summarize this by saying that I
had a fantastic time in Newfoundland and that I would recommend to everyone
reading this to visit it at least once in your lifetime.
We then drove roughly 3.5 hours
to get to Port Aux Basques, with heavy rain the entire drive over, but
thankfully we made it there safely. Today was a long, but very eventful day, so
I’m hoping for a good night’s sleep because we have a 16 hour drive tomorrow
from North Sydney to Ottawa!
