Day 14 - MUN
Hello friends, our third consecutive day in St. John's did not disappoint, and we managed to see more of the natural beauty that Canada (and in this case, Newfoundland) is known for. We had a bit of a late start today, but honestly we needed a bit more sleep after the organized-chaos that has been the past few days. We drove down to the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) and walked over to the S.J. Carew Building where we met up with my new friend named Julie (God bless Olivia Baker for setting up so much for us in Newfoundland). We couldn't have chosen a better person to give us a tour of the place if we tried, she had the wildest stories to tell about MUN and the experiences she's had. which made the visit that much more interesting. She showed us around the Engineering building and told us about the different traditions that they have, including the mural that every graduating class gets to make and put up in their building. We stopped by their EngSoc office, but it was unfortunately closed. They have a wall called the "Wall of Excellence" that is apparently somewhere that MUN students take a lot of their pictures, so I just had to take one as well. She took us to almost every building on campus, and one major observation I had is that MUN has so many overpasses, even some that go from one side of a 4-lane street to the next (yeah their campus is quite huge). They also have underground tunnels, which they cleverly call MUNnels, that connect all the buildings together, which is quite neat. While on the other side of campus, we saw two things of note. Firstly was a clock tower with the MUN crest on it, and secondly was a life size replica of a whale vagina that was put up in the arts building... welcome to Newfoundland I guess? Overall, MUN was a lot of fun, and was very much worth the drive all the way to Newfoundland to see it.
Anthony and I then drove down to the MUN Botanical Gardens, which was a huge garden that spanned about 4 km and had some amazing views. We spent about 2 hours just hiking through the woods and walking through the garden, and even though we exhausted a decent amount of energy this was one of the more relaxing aspects of my trip so far. We then went to Bowring Park for a stroll and sat next to a pond of ducks and mallards for a bit, which was really nice. Today we got to really just sit down and take in the beauty and relaxing atmosphere of the nature surrounding us in St. John's, and it was wonderful. On our way home, we stopped by Berg's Famous Ice Cream, which completely undid all the exercise that we went through today... and it was worth it. We drove through a small town called Paradise, and we definitely found our own little slice of paradise while in Newfoundland so it was quite applicable. When we got home, I did a bit of sewing on my covies, and now officially have 350 patches sewed on!
Because the past few days have been so crammed with things to do, there isn't much of a plan for tomorrow, but I'm sure we'll find something to do. Given my tourist-y nature over the past 2 weeks, I am pretty much fascinated by anything different.
